The authors, Elaine Wylie and David Ingram, changed the name from 'Australian Second Language Proficiency Ratings' (ASLPR) to 'International Second Language Proficiency Ratings' (ISLPR) in 1997.
The main reason for the change was the rapid growth in the international use of the scale and associated assessment procedures in recent years. In the international context, the use of the term ‘Australian’ could be confusing and possibly seen as limiting the instrument’s applicability to Australian English or the use of other languages in the Australian context.
